The Titanic may have sunk in 1912, but Molly Brown’s heroism secured her name in history and legend. At Performance Riverside, her legend lives on in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, opening November 13. This spirited tale of a real-life American original follows the exploits of Molly Brown, whose feisty determination to move beyond her impoverished beginnings leads her from the backwoods of Hannibal, Missouri, to the palaces of Europe. With music and lyrics by Meredith Willson, creator of the Broadway classic, The Music Man, and a book by Richard Henry Morris, author of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Molly Brown still reigns supreme in the court of Broadway’s royalty. The production is directed and choreographed by Roger Castellano, musically directed by Scott T. Smith and produced by Rey O’Day.

The real Margaret Tobin Brown is often portrayed as a backward social outcast who struggled for recognition,” says O’Day, “but she was years ahead of her time. She used her wealth and position to work for social, political and labor reform. She was a constant advocate for people who didn't have a voice.” Brown ran for the Senate twice, was a leader in Women’s suffrage, and was awarded the French Legion of Honor for her work in World War I. On April 15, 1912, she was a first-class passenger on RMS Titanic when it sank. Characteristically, she helped many others to lifeboats before she finally left the ship in Lifeboat No. 6. Brown earned her title of “Unsinkable Molly Brown” when she and several other women passengers took control of the boat, rowing back to look for survivors, against the demands and protests of the head crewman. This incident is vividly depicted in James Cameron’s 1997 film, Titanic, with Oscar winning actress Kathy Bates portraying Margaret Brown.

Stacey Huntington returns to Performance Riverside to play one of her dream roles. Twenty years ago, Stacey was a 14 year old Centennial High School student when she first stepped foot on the Landis stage in the chorus of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.  One of Performance Riverside’s success stories, she’s appeared at Landis as Miss Flannery in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Marty in Grease, Sister Mary Leo in Nunsense, Minnie Fay in Hello Dolly and Maggie in A Chorus Line. Most recently she starred as Adelaide in Performance Riverside’s Guys and Dolls. She has also been featured at the Candlelight Pavilion, the Glendale Centre Theatre, the Moonlight Amphitheatre, and in shows at the Disneyland Resort. She stars daily in the role of Mother, playing “princesses” with her 3-year-old twin daughters.

Isaac James is featured as Leadville Johnny Brown, with an ensemble featuring Fernando Acevedo, Brandon Alpert, Amy E. Bolton, Michael Cavinder, David Critchlow, Kaitlyn Etter, Chase Haninger, Jennifer Harmon, Joanne J. Lapointe, Nicole Manly, Rachel McLaughlin, Aaron Milligan, Michael Milligan, Lexy Romano, and Cedric Wright.

Performance Riverside is the professional theatrical production company based at the Landis Performing Arts Center at Riverside City College.  Performance Riverside seeks to engage, inspire, educate, entertain, bring together and enlighten the diverse Inland Empire community with the magic of live performances.

Performances of The Unsinkable Molly Brown are November 13, 14, 20, and 21 at 8pm, and September 14, 15, 21, and 22 at 2pm. Tickets are $25, $30, $37, and $43. Specially priced “Discovery Theatre” previews for school and senior groups are also available on Friday, November 13 and Thursday, November 19 at 10am. What is Gypsy"? From Wikipedia ...

"Gypsy:A Musical Fable" is a 1959 musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents. It is usually referred to as simply Gypsy. Gypsy is based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist, and focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with "the ultimate show business mother." In particular, it follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life. The character of Louise is based on Lee, and the character of June is based on Lee's sister, the actress June Havoc.

The musical contains many songs that became popular standards, including "Small World," "Everything's Coming up Roses", "You'll Never Get Away from Me," and "Let Me Entertain You." It is frequently considered one of the crowning achievements of the mid-20th century's conventional musical theatre art form, often called the "book musical."

Gypsy has been referred to as the greatest American musical by numerous critics and writers.

It has inspired a dynamic grassroots movement -- V-Day -- to stop violence against women.

The Vagina Monologues explores the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in womens experiences.  It is based on interviews with a diverse group of hundreds of womenfrom a Long Island antiques dealer to a Bosnian refugee.

Witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise, Eve Enslers Obie Award winning masterpiece gives voice to womens deepest fantasies and fears, guaranteeing that no one who reads it will ever look at a womans body, or think of sex, in quite the same way again.

This is a delightful story of an inquisitive youth named Monroe who wanders into a seemingly abandoned factory, owned by a Mr. Aesop. The youngster accidentally trips a lever, which activates the factory "machinery," an assembly line of fable-makers who create, then enact Aesop's fabulous fables. Among them are Straucy, the Story Starter; Pluto, the Plot Plotter; Wadsworth, the Word Worker; and Gretel, the Grammar Guardian. These workers proceed to create what become official fables when Monroe himself surprises everyone by supplying the morals. Mr. Aesop and the others are ecstatic over their new-found "Moral Maker." The troupe then performs some of the best of Aesop's fables with bright and charming songs.

Maria Stuarda or "Mary, Queen of Scots":

THE STORY

In a powerful political and religious chess game where death makes the final move, England’s Queen Elizabeth confronts her cousin, the rebellious Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland who is accused of treason. Caught in the middle is the Earl of Leicester, who loves Mary but is desired by Elizabeth. In a dramatic confrontation between the two Queens, it becomes obvious there is no room in Britain for two such powerful adversaries. Torn between the need to consolidate her power and the compassion she feels for Mary, Elizabeth puts personal feelings aside and is finally convinced by her courtiers to behead her own relative. She orders Leicester to watch the execution. [English Synopsis] [Videos & Podcasts]

12/18/2006: Joanne begins rehearsals with the San Diego Opera!

Joanne will be in four operas with the San Diego Opera (www.sdopera.com) from December to April.

Information about them (taken from the San Diego Opera's beautiful website) is below, and you can go to http://www.sdopera.com/tickets/pricing.html for seat information and pricing.

Boris Godunov

The coronation scene, with the bells of the Kremlin ringing out and the chorus bursting with enormous vocal force, is just one of the powerful moments in this true classic story of a Czar who arranged the murder of the young Dimitri, rightful heir to the throne. Boris now occupies the throne as underlings plot around him, and a false Dimitri plans to attack Moscow. Driven to an insane, agonizing death by his guilty conscience, Boris dies in the council chamber, a broken man.

The role of Boris is a dream role for every bass and we have todays most acclaimed Boris, Ferruccio Furlanetto, the only Italian ever to sing the role in Russia.

Set amid the glittering opulence of sixteenth century Czarist Russia, this historic opera, with sumptuous sets and costumes, lush orchestration and a huge chorus, will most certainly be a bravura production.

Show times:

  • Saturday, January 27, 2007, 7pm
  • Tuesday, January 30, 2007, 7pm
  • Friday, February 2, 2007, 8pm
  • Sunday, February 4, 2007, 2pm

Samson and Delilah

International superstar Denyce Graves makes her dazzling San Diego Opera debut as the biblical seductress Delilah, joined by a magnificent Samson direct from the Metropolitan Opera celebrated tenor Clifton Forbis.

Theyll sing you the Bibles passionate story of the Philistine temptress who pits her wiles, and her sex, against the superhuman strength of the mighty Hebrew warrior. Shearing his hair, she steals his strength and triumphs in her battle only to lose the war as he brings the pillars of her world crashing down upon them in the spectacular finale.

The music moves expressively from the sounds of romantic love to an erotic pagan bacchanal, painting a stunning picture of the ancient world. Add our superstar cast along with lavish sets & costumes and you have a taste of the exotic, the erotic and the primitive. An opera of biblical proportions.

Show times:

  • Saturday, February 17, 2007, 7pm
  • Tuesday, February 20, 2007, 7pm
  • Friday, February 23, 2007, 8pm

Il trovatore

From the composer of La traviata comes another incredibly popular opera rich in melody and exciting choruses, arias to die for and one of the most intriguing plots in all of opera. Il trovatore tells the story of a vengeful mother who steals the baby of her enemy, raises him as her own and sets him against his brother who competes for the same woman and political power. Not knowing they are related, one brother captures, tortures and executes the other, only to find out too late from the deranged woman that it was his own sibling.

Singing the roles of the brothers will be Covent Garden stars Nicola Rossi Giordano and Alexandru Agache, joined by Vienna State Opera star Paoletta Marrocu and from the Metropolitan Opera, Marianne Cornetti. Four great voices, Verdis brilliant music, a story of love, jealousy and vengeance&what more could you want?

Wozzeck

This extraordinary opera of torment, power, hatred and murder marks the opera directing debut of Tony Award® Winner Des McAnuff, artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse. With music so extraordinary, descriptive and dramatic, you will be immediately enveloped in the excruciating emotion of Bergs music.

Wozzeck is a powerless and oppressed soldier, a guinea pig for medical experiments in order to get money, his common-law wife, the mother of his illegitimate son. Humiliated by her affairs with his superiors, his jealousy, neurotic behavior and madness bring murder and suicide.

Sung in English with Franz Hawlata, the worlds foremost Wozzeck, in a new production designed by a Tony Award® winning team. Wozzeck will disturb, fascinate and excite you in a single tense and powerful 90 minute act. The theatrical experience of the year!

Reviews

From the North County Times

Audiences arriving for "My Fair Lady" at the Welk Resort Theatre might suspect they're in for something special just by looking at the elegant proscenium arch that frames the stage. And sure enough, the upscale, Victorian stained-glass-looking archway is just a hint of the quality that awaits in this top-drawer production.

The cast of this Lerner and Loewe classic is rock solid, the sets and costumes are lush and elaborate, the choreography is energetic and the show moves like a house on fire. The production, directed and choreographed by Jon Engstrom, pays homage to the musical's 1964 film version (from the stage blocking to the costumes), but it also takes a fresh and funny look at the show's original 1956 book.

1/12/2005: Joanne is in Evita at the Welk Theater in Escondio, CA!!

.

Winner of seven Tony Awards, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita is the epic story of the life of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator, Juan Peron. The charismatic Eva rises from poverty to climb the ladder of success - first as a model, then an actress, and finally as the wife of General Peron to become the most powerful woman in South America. Told entirely through song and dance and intertwined seamlessly with Webber and Rice’s rich and beautiful score, this musical’s highlight is the internationally acclaimed song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.”

One of Broadway’s sparkling jewels that can be enjoyed again and again!
